The World Cup is mostly a young man's game — but a few veterans have rewritten the record books.

• Essam El-Hadary (Egypt) — played in 2018 aged 45, the oldest player in World Cup history
• Roger Milla (Cameroon) — scored in 1994 aged 42, the oldest goalscorer
• Lothar Matthäus (Germany) — appeared at five tournaments, his last in 1998

El-Hadary even faced a penalty on his record-breaking appearance. Experience clearly still has a place at the very top.
