How World Cup 2026 group standings and tiebreakers work
Group games are worth three points for a win and one for a draw. The top two in each group advance automatically, and the eight best third-placed teams join them — so even the order of teams level on points matters.
The tiebreaker order
When two or more teams finish level on points, they're separated using these criteria, applied in order:
- Goal difference across all group matches
- Goals scored across all group matches
- Points in the matches between the tied teams
- Goal difference in the matches between the tied teams
- Goals scored in the matches between the tied teams
- Fair-play points (fewer yellow and red cards)
- Drawing of lots
That's why goal difference is so precious late in the group stage — and why ranking the third-placed teams comes down to the same fine margins. Put your own order in on the predictor.
