The World Cup trophy: history and facts
The gold trophy lifted by the champions is one of the most recognisable prizes in sport. Here is the story behind it.
The current trophy
The FIFA World Cup Trophy has been awarded since 1974. Designed by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, it stands about 37cm tall, is made of 18-carat gold, and shows two figures holding up the Earth.
The Jules Rimet Trophy
The original trophy, named after FIFA's former president, was used from 1930 to 1970. Brazil were allowed to keep it permanently after winning their third title in 1970. Winners today receive a gold-plated replica, not the original.
